SUPER CUPS OOZE QUALITY, DRAMA AND DRIVE
ENGLISH COMMUNITY SHIELD
Manchester City lifted the Community Shield trophy after beating Liverpool on penalties.
It was an entertaining and edgy game in front of a huge and excited Wembley crowd.
Sterling finally scored his first goal against his old club when he turned home David Silva’s flick-on from close range.
The woodwork was hit three times in quick succession in the second half, as Sterling struck the post in a one on one, Virgil van Dijk shot against the underside of the bar and Mohamed Salah hit a post.
Liverpool drew level when Joel Matip headed home Van Dijk’s cross.
Salah had at least three big chances – most remarkably his header that was sensationally cleared off the line by a Walker bicycle kick.
And so the game went straight to penalties, with City scoring all of theirs and Liverpool missing one.
SUPERTAÇA CÂNDIDO DE OLIVEIRA
The Portuguese super cup was basically a dead competition in the end as Benfica smashed Sporting Lisbon, 5-0.
Pizzi scored a brace, while Rafa Silva, Alex Grimaldo and Chiquinho were also on target against Sporting, who had Idrissa Doumbia sent off in the 89th minute.
GERMAN SUPER CUP
The reigning German champions lost by 2 goals to nil to their bitter rivals, Dortmund.
The first half was mostly a caged affair with chances far and inbetween.
Two minutes into the second half though, Sancho made a fine run and set up Paco Alcacer, who shot past Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
A Leon Goretzka effort and Kingsley Coman’s header were the closest Bayern came to score.
Sancho then only went and scored Dortmund’s second with a low strike after another fine run.
ROPHEE DES CHAMPIONS
Paris St-Germain had to fight back from a goal down to beat Rennes 2-1 in the French Super Cup, played in China.
Rennes took an early lead against PSG when Adrien Hunou finished from Benjamin Bourigeaud’s cross.
PSG equalised 12 minutes into the second half when Kylian Mbappe scored into an empty net after Pablo Sarabia’s pass.
PSG won it with a spectacular free-kick from Angel di Maria.
